The Clementines are the citrus fruits obtained from cultivars, clonal selections and bud mutations:
  • Thorny,
  • SRA 63,
  • Common
  • Hernandine
  • Faithful
  • Late
  • Marisol
  • Nothing.

Method of production

Clementines are grown on medium-textured soils in plants, especially widespread in coastal and flat areas.
The prevailing form of cultivation is the "full canopy" with a rectangle arrangement of the plants.
Furthermore, the plants must be appropriately spaced from those of the mandarin, in such a way as to avoid cross-pollination that would lead to the production of fruit with seeds.
The harvest is carried out only once throughout the year, in the period between October and February.

Appearance and flavor

Clementines have a spheroidal shape slightly flattened at the poles.
The peel appears smooth, dark orange in color, with numerous oil glands.
The pulp is juicy, deliquescent and aromatic, characterized by the absence of seeds or a small number of them.

Area of production

The Clementine production area involves 61 municipalities in the provinces of Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, Cosenza, Vibo Valentia and Crotone, in the Calabria region.

History

Clementines are a hybrid between bitter orange and common mandarin and are the most profitable citrus fruit due to the earliness and goodness of the fruit.
The birth probably took place at the beginning of the twentieth century in the garden of an orphanage in Misserghin, Algeria, from the cross between the Havana mandarin and the bitter orange Granito, following direct sowing carried out by Father Clément Rodier (from whom they tract the name).
According to another hypothesis, however, the hybrid would be older and would come from China, the Algerian priest would have simply introduced it to the Mediterranean.
Between 1930 and 1950 the cultivation of clementines spread in Calabria, where this citrus fruit found its natural habitat, becoming a stable and extremely relevant crop for both the economy and the traditions of the area ever since.

Excellent, fragrant and fresh clementines, my wife particularly appreciated the complimentary lemons. Always give priority to serious and professional work and Italian agricultural production and first and foremost that of Calabria. Customer for years, satisfied with having added citrus fruits to the purchase of oil, cured meats and cheeses.
